We all know what we are retiring from, less certain is what we are retiring to.
Most people look forward to retirement as a time of taking life easy after years of hard work. It will be a great phase of our life after you work out what you do want in retirement. It is not surprising that retirement is one of the top ten stressful life events. The dream for retirement often does not go beyond the thought of not having to battle the traffic every morning or face up to a disagreeable boss at team meetings. It is hard to imagine what life will be like after leaving work.
When we think of retirement our first thought is “Do I have enough money to retire?”
Of course, we do need an income in our retirement years. However, research has shown the following factors comprise a successful retirement.
Finance and health are considered the main factors in being able to enjoy retirement. After that it is our ability to recreate our life without work. That is create a new sense of purpose for our life. When we leave work, we lose some of our identity and our sense of security. The question arises, “Who will we become in retirement?” Being able to recreate our life will be influenced by the remaining resources; social, emotional, cognitive and motivational levels. These factors are all within our control. Social resources are considered of second importance after finances and health as social connections are very important to the feeling of belonging in our society. Emotional, Cognitive and Motivation are third in the resource’s stakes. Learning to manage these three factors can be challenging. It usually involves the self-talk that goes on in our head. Our ability to think clearly, manage strong emotions in a healthy way and be proactive will determine how meaningful our retirement becomes. It is possible to transform our life and become a higher vision of ourselves.
